Chapter 12
âHow much do you want to bet he has tinfoil over the windows of his apartment?â I asked Ophelia when the front door to Ethanâs building closed behind him.
âThere is a fine line between having strong political convictions and believing in conspiracy theories, and Ethan certainly seems to be walking along it like a tightrope. That said, his opinions are certainly shared by quite a few people. But he is not our murderer. He is simply a person with too much time on their hands seeking attention on the internet.â
âHe did seem a little bit too disappointed that heâd never even been blocked by Jason Bergman,â I agreed.
âIt was always a long shot, anyway. Social media and the internet give people freedom to say things they would never dare to say to a personâs face in real life. Thereâs a certain sense of anonymity when youâre typing words behind a keyboard. Still, given the frequency of the threats, he was worth investigating. We will go see Zoe Andrianakis now.â
âYes, she has a history of trying to break into Bergmanâs home. Thatâs a little bit more criminal than posting threatening tweets,â I said. âItâs weird, hoping that weâre going to meet someone who has actually killed another human being. But thatâs the only way this ends, isnât it? And either way, I was near a killer the other day. I just donât know exactly who it was.â
âExactly. Ethan was right when he said there are killers all around us. But then, we canât think about that too much, can we? Societyâs functioning depends on us being able to more or less trust the other people in our immediate vicinity to not murder us in cold blood.â
âIt sure does,â I replied. âAll the same, Iâll be happier if we do manage to get at least one more killer off the streets.â
âAs will I,â Ophelia said. âUnlike Ethan, I do not determine a personâs value based on their income. A murder victim is a murder victim, regardless of their net worth. They still deserve justice. And the people who did not kill him, but are considered suspects, deserve to continue their lives in peace. A major crime like a murder almost always affects more than just the person whoâs been killed.â
We walked back toward Opheliaâs office and jumped into her car to get to Zoeâs home. She lived in an apartment in Nob Hill, one of the fancier neighborhoods in the city.
And boy, when they called it a hill, they were not lying. We flew up Taylor Street before hitting the red light at the top of the hill where it intersected with California Street, and the street was so steeply angled I felt like someone had strapped me into a space shuttle and we were about to blast off. Iâd never be able to afford to live up here, but if I did, Iâd be in the best shape of my life just from trying to walk back home from the grocery store.
